Holidays in Sri Lanka
Day 01: Mumbai – Colombo – Dambulla
Arrive Colombo International Airport in early morning. On arrival you will be met by our representative and transferred to Dambulla. En route visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage – Started in 1975 to house the abandoned and the wounded, the orphanage has grown to be a big family today. A unique experience never to be missed. On completion transfer to Dambulla, where on arrival check in hotel.
Later in evening proceed to visit Rock Temple. Dambulla is a vast isolated rock mass 500ft high and a mile around the base. Here is found the famous Rock Temple dating to the First Century BC. The caves of Dambulla sheltered the King Walagamba during his 14 years of exile from Anuradhapura. When he regained the throne he built the most magnificent of Rock Temples to be found on the Island. Later return back to hotel and relax for the day.
Day 02: Dambulla
Enjoy breakfast in hotel. Today you will visit huge Rock fortress Sigiriya.
Sigiriya is home to the 5th Century "Fortress in the Sky" which is perhaps the most fantastic single wonder of the Island. It is also known as Lion Rock because of the huge lion that used to stand at the entrance to the fortress. Within its triple-moated defence the huge rock rises almost to a sheer height of 500ft. On its summit are the foundations of what was once a great and sumptuous palace and gardens complete with swimming pool. On one of the stairways the only known ancient work of Sinhala secular painting survived in the form of Frescoes of life sized damsels in all the freshness and delicacy of their original colour. Return back to hotel in afternoon and relax for the day.
Day 03: Dambulla – Kandy
After breakfast check out hotel and proceed towards Kandy, the hill capital. Venue of the annual Perahera. The last stronghold of the Sinhala Kings was finally ceded to the British in 1815. Kandy is an example of the Buddhism's influence in Sri Lanka today. Temple's shrines and monasteries keeping alive Buddhist traditions everywhere. On arrival enjoy Kandy city tour which includes Upper Lake Drive, Market Square and Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic – ever since 4th Century A.D, when the Buddha's Tooth was brought to Sri Lanka hidden from sacrilegious hands in an Orissan princess' hair, the Relic has grown in repute and holiness in Sri Lanka and throughout the Buddhist world. It is considered Sri Lanka's most prized possession.
Later check in hotel and relax for the day.
Day 04: Kandy – Nuwara Eliya
After breakfast check out hotel and proceed towards the most popular hill station of Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya. Enroute visit Shri Bhakt Hanuman Hanuman Temple at Ramoba. On these hills of Ramboda where Hanuman was searching for Sitadevi, the Chinmaya mission of Sri Lanka built a temple with Hanuman as the presiding deity. On every full moon day special pooja"s are conducted and witnessed by thousands of devotees. Later continue towards Nuwara Eliya, it is also known as 'Little England' of Sri Lanka, set against beautiful backdrops of Mountains, Valleys, Waterfalls and Tea Plantations. It is supposed to be one of the coldest places on the island.
On arrival visit one of the Tea plantations. Tea was first planted in Sri Lanka in 1824 at the Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, when a few plants were brought from China. More were introduced from Assam in 1839. In 1867 a Scottish Planter named James Taylor planted tea seedlings on an 8 hectares of forestland, in the Loolcondura Estate. Later check in hotel and relax for the day.
Day 05: Nuwara Eliya
Enjoy breakfast at hotel. Today you will visit the Temple of Goddess Sita, known as Seetha Aman Temple. The stream that runs from the hill, catered to the needs of Sitadevi during her stay at Ashoka Vatika. She is said to have bathed in this stream. Now there is a temple erected for Lord Rama, Sitadevi, Luxshmana and Hanuman by the side of this stream. It is interesting to note that foot prints akin to Lord Hamunams are found by this river -some small and some large.
Later visit Divurumpola situated in Nuwara Eliya Welimada road. Divurmpola means a place where one takes an oath. Sitadevi, after being liberated from King Ravana was subjected to a test to prove here chastity by offering herself to the fire. However she came unscathed and proved her holiness during this ritual at this place. Evening return back to Nuwara Eliya and relax for the day.
Day 06: Nuwara Eliya – Bentota
After breakfast check out hotel and proceed towards the popular beach side resort village Bentota. On arrival check in hotel and relax for the day.
Day 07: Bentota
Enjoy breakfast in hotel, today's entire day is free for leisure activities or optional water sports activities.
Day 08: Colombo – Mumbai
After breakfast check out hotel and proceed towards Colombo. On arrival enjoy local sightseeing. Begin with first stop at Panchmuga Anjaneyar Temple, followed by City tour. A drive through the city taking you to the busy commercial areas as well as the tree-lined residential, Cinnamon Gardens. Visit Fort, the former British administrative center and military garrison, Sea Street - the Goldsmith's quarters in the heart of Pettah, the Bazaar area, where there is a Hindu Temple with elaborate stone carvings, and the Dutch Church of Wolfendhal dating back to 1749. The historic Dawatagaha Mosque and the former Eye Hospital are two buildings in Cinnamon Gardens worth looking at. Also visit the BMICH, see the replica of Avukana Buddha and the Independence Square.
Later in evening drive to Colombo International Airport and check in your flight for Mumbai.
